Jessie Miller guest speaker:
In this week’s lecture, we were lucky enough to have Jessie Miller from https://www.mediatedreality.com/ come into the class and talked about social media and technologies in the classroom.
He highlighted some ways and strategies for educators to be safe and responsible on Social media:
- CONSENT!!! – Jessie pointed out as educators we have to be very careful with taking and posting photos of other people, especially students. Make sure that you have the consent of anyone that is in a video or photo you have. Not all students are old enough to give consent, most schools will send out a consent form at the start of the year, that the adults sign and give consent to the school to take photos of their child. As teachers it is important that we still ask the student before taking the picture or video even if their parent has already signed the consent form.
How can Educators be safe using Social Media:
- Never post a photo of students on your personal account
- Don’t allow students to follow your account, make your personal accounts settings are privatized
- Keep in mind that other educators/bosses are able to look at your social media so be aware of what you are posting.
- Be aware that students, parents and other people will look you up, and remove anything that is unprofessional
- Search yourself on google
- Search up your email on google
- Search your social media account username on google
